Hunter Karenbauer
Hunter Karenbauer is a percussionist and music educator based in Butler, Pennsylvania, United States, known for his stylistic versatility, expressive control, and deep-rooted passion for connecting performers and audiences through rhythm. A performer equally at home in jazz clubs, concert halls, and theater pits, Hunter brings a refined sense of groove, color, and musicality to every setting.
His performance credits include appearances at renowned international festivals such as Umbria Jazz and Jazz à Juan, as well as collaborations with celebrated artists including Patrick Bartley, Wycliffe Gordon, Adam Swanson, the Jazz Legacy Project, and others. At Slippery Rock University, he has held principal roles in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble, served as a soloist with the Percussion Ensemble, and contributed as a leader and educator within the university music community.
As a Koide Cymbals Artist, Hunter performs with the 703 Series, drawn to their dynamic range, warm articulation, and ability to respond naturally to subtle changes in touch and phrasing. The 703s have become an essential part of his voice on the drum set—equally suited to crisp ride articulation in straight-ahead jazz, explosive crashes in theatrical hits, or washy textures in modern improvisation.
In addition to performing, Hunter is an active teacher and clinician. He works with hundreds of young musicians each year as a private instructor, ensemble coach, classroom teacher, and presenter at music education conferences.
